Weird SSL/secure connections issue in Vista

I am not sure if this is only through for Vista but me and a colleague at work started experiencing intermittent connection problem when we tried to sign in to Windows Live Messenger and visit secure websites. We also had issue to connect to Google Mail via Outlook as it is using secure connections too.

I did a lot of searching to try to find a solution for this but what I found didn’t help.

I installed Firefox on my colleagues computer and it was able to visit the secure https websites. Though it turned out to be only a minor fix as some of the secure sites required Internet Explorer to be used.

Then it hit me, what if it is related to that the logged in user is in a domain? While logged in with a domain user that could not connect to the messenger service I switched user to a local login and tried to connect to messenger. Wouldn’t you know, it worked!

I removed the computer from the domain and rejoined it, now messenger and all other secure connections were working for the domain user. I applied this “fix” to my own computer and it is working for me too.

Now if I only knew why it happened.
